Former Open Cup champion John Kerr Sr dies at age 67

John Kerr Sr., a former NASL player before moving on to a coaching career and position as MLS Player's Association Executive Director, died Sunday night at his North Carolina home. In addition to playing in the NASL, Kerr was a member of the German American Soccer League's New York Hota, leading them to the 1971 US Open Cup championship. Kerr was later a head coach for the Richmond Kickers in 1994 and guided the A-League Worcester Wildfire in the 1998 US Open Cup. The club defeated the Charlotte Eagles 2-0 in the Second Round and played to a 2-2 draw on the road against the MLS Tampa Bay Mutiny before being eliminated in penalties, 5-4.
