CFU Club Championship Kicking Off

While the CONCACAF Champions League semifinals remain a week away, the CFU Club Championship in the Caribbean kicks off with the First Round Thursday evening with a pair of matches featuring clubs from Trinidad.

Two more of the five series begin Sunday, including the series that will determine the opponent for the defending champion and three-time CONCACAF Champions League participant Puerto Rico Islanders, who received the lone bye to the Second Round. The Islanders will face the winner of Northern United (St. Lucia) versus Walking Boyz Co. (Suriname).

The tournament could see for the first time another Puerto Rican club join the Islanders in the Champions League as one of the top three finishers with two new clubs from regional power Trinidad making their CFU tournament debut in the CFU championship. Trinidad’s Defence Force and Caledonia AIA are arguably the front-runners with the Islanders to be favorites to advance to the CCL, but with Puerto Rico’s Bayamon finishing in fourth after a competitive performance a year ago, River Plate PR will also likely be a contender from the start.

River Plate PR’s odds, though, took a bit of a dip with a change in its schedule as stadium availability led to the club needing to play both legs of its First Round series against Bodden Town FC on the road in the Cayman Islands. It will be the last series to get underway in the opening round as the two legs will be played out in three days on March 18 and 20.
