Open Cup clubs unaffected by Hurricane Irene

Hurricane Irene created three cancellations within the Major League Soccer schedule for the weekend, but has had no effect on the upcoming US Open Cup semifinals. All three MLS clubs are in action west of the Mississippi Saturday evening. Even the fourth club, Richmond Kickers, appear to be on schedule with no word of postponements out of Orlando, Florida where they are scheduled to play in the USL Pro semifinals Saturday night.

In 1998 the tournament final was originally slated to be played at a neutral site venue, the Virginia Beach Sportsplex, before being rescheduled due to a hurricane. Hurricane Bonnie made landfall in North Carolina August 27 at a Category 3 level and left a lot of damage in Virginia in addition to postponing the schedule match. The game, despite much debate, was moved to October 30 at Soldier Field, where the host Chicago Fire defeated the Columbus Crew 2-1 in overtime with Fire Technical Director and current interim coach Frank Klopas scoring the winning goal in the 99th minute. It was the second half of the expansion club's double for the year, also claiming the MLS Cup title five days earlier with a 2-0 victory over DC United at the Rose Bowl.
