The long NCC wait is nearly over; CCL Prelims near

The final participant for the upcoming CONCACAF Champions League is set to be determined Saturday when the Vancouver Whitecaps and Toronto FC play the second leg of the Nutrilite Canadian Championship Final. The two clubs go into the contest level 1-1 on aggregate.

It will certainly have been a lengthy wait in one of the largest spans imaginable between two legs of a championship series at 45 days. The extraordinarily long hiatus was courtesy of a thunderstorm that wiped out the second leg with the Whitecaps leading on the road in the second half of the contest.

Time for the Main Course

Enough with the appetizers of the first two rounds of the US Open Cup, it is time for the main course. The third round is the juicy entre that is the heart of the meal as the lower division teams get their first crack at Major League Soccer opposition.

Sure, the final four of the event may feature great games as the MLS clubs ratchet things up in an attempt to win the trophy, but it is the Third Round that is the most suspenseful as the nation looks on to see who and how many teams register the shocking upsets versus the nation’s top flight. The eight-game series is the closest the sport comes to capturing the anticipation of NCAA basketball’s March Madness.

A Look Back: Remembering the Spokane Spokes

Adam Deutsch / Spokesman-Review
While we research potential US Open Cup history concerning the club, we thought we would share a story recently written by Rebecca Nappi and published by the Spokesman-Review about the Spokane Spokes, a team created by German-American immigrants that played from 1958 to 1978.

It is a great recount of some of atmosphere from the earlier days of the game in the United States, including a nice little story about the team's trip to play an Italian side in Canada.

Feature stories about the pre-USL/MLS era of the game are rare, so we hope you enjoy it.

Gold Cup Overlap Update: Red Bulls missing trio

Six more teams were knocked out of the 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup in the Quarterfinals and Semifinals over the past week, but only four players are making their return to MLS clubs slated for starting their US Open Cup campaigns Tuesday. Five remain with the United States and Mexico for Saturday’s Final at the Rose Bowl.

The US eliminated Jamaica 2-0 in the Quarterfinals Sunday evening, sending goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts back to the LA Galaxy and Dane Richards to the New York Red Bulls. The two clubs are set for derbies versus local USL Pro clubs in the Third Round. Ricketts made eight saves in the loss, but allowed his first two goals of the tournament after recording three clean sheets in group play. Richards finished with two assists.

Eliminated via penalties, 4-2, after a 1-1 draw with Honduras Saturday, Costa Rica’s Alvaro Saborio may be looking for redemption in Real Salt Lake’s first Open Cup appearance since 2006. Tied 1-1, Saborio had a chance to win the match for the Ticos in the 76th minute with a penalty kick but struck the attempt poorly, allowing the netminder to make the stop. Trailing 2-1 after the first two rounds of the shootout, Saborio’s effort rang off the crossbar, dooming Costa Rica to the eventual elimination.

The Hondurans, and Sporting Kansas City's Roger Espinoza, would fall 2-0 Wednesday in overtime by Mexico. Espinoza had a chance to provide the winner in the 90th minute on a long-range effort only to see the keeper make a diving stop.

Still in the tournament are the Red Bulls’ Rafael Marquez with Mexico and the US foursome of the Columbus Crew’s Robbie Rogers, LA Galaxy’s Landon Donovan and the New York duo of Tim Ream and Juan Agudelo.

With a trio of Red Bulls set to play in the Final Saturday, the club will likely rest all three come Tuesday’s Open Cup contest.

For the initial report on the Overlap Affect of the CONCACAF Gold Cup on the US Open Cup, as well as the list of the players on international duty, view it here at TheCup.us.

Former Open Cup champion John Kerr Sr dies at age 67

John Kerr Sr., a former NASL player before moving on to a coaching career and position as MLS Player's Association Executive Director, died Sunday night at his North Carolina home. In addition to playing in the NASL, Kerr was a member of the German American Soccer League's New York Hota, leading them to the 1971 US Open Cup championship. Kerr was later a head coach for the Richmond Kickers in 1994 and guided the A-League Worcester Wildfire in the 1998 US Open Cup. The club defeated the Charlotte Eagles 2-0 in the Second Round and played to a 2-2 draw on the road against the MLS Tampa Bay Mutiny before being eliminated in penalties, 5-4.

MLS Open Cup clubs on a run

Bad news for the lower division teams playing in the Second Round Tuesday. Their Third Round opponents are in good form. With the New York Red Bulls’ dramatic come-from-behind 3-3 draw Sunday night in Portland, the qualified Open Cup teams have not lost to a non-qualified opponent in their last 33 matches.

That is an unbeaten streak for the eight teams that dates back to a 1-0 loss by the Columbus Crew in Portland and a 2-1 Chicago Fire loss in Philadelphia on May 21, making the streak at least a month long considering the next match is not until Wednesday, June 22.  The streak is 36 matches if you also include the three other matches with Cup-qualified teams that night.

After the Open Cup & Who's New York's Team

There were five clubs in the 2011 US Open Cup that have played in CONCACAF’s club championship tournament as representatives from the Open Cup. It would probably surprise you to know that only two are in Major League Soccer.

As the defending repeat champions, the Seattle Sounders are headed to a second CONCACAF Champions League appearance later this summer. The Columbus Crew represented the 2002 US Open Cup in the 2003 edition of the event. But before them there was the New York Pancyprian Freedoms who themselves have three appearances in CONCACAF’s club championship event in its numerous formats through the years.

Budweiser Spends $39 Million on FA Cup; nearly the same on entire US game

It was announced Thursday that St Louis-based (now Belgium-owned) Anheuser-Busch has signed a three-year deal with the English FA to sponsor the association’s newly named ‘FA Cup with Budweiser.’ The deal was announced at £8million per year, or the equivalent of $39 million US dollars to for the entire package.

The new look of the FA Cup trophy
It is a not exactly a shocking deal when you consider the sponsorship money that is thrown around the world’s major sports.

In soccer, Heineken recently renewed its UEFA Champions League deal through 2014/15 reportedly for between $28.5 to $57 million total, or per season depending on the source. On top of that, Heineken even signed a three-year deal with ESPNSoccernet, though terms were not released. In addition, the Coors Brewers sponsorship of the Carling Cup through 2012 is valued at $9 million a year for $27 million overall.

So why is the, ironically named for this situation, ‘King of Beers’ replacing E.ON (a German utility company)? Well, it is to expand the global reach of the FA Cup, according to FA General Secretary Alex Horne, who is pleased that the tournament will reach new heights in world-wide marketing compared to E.ON’s primarily local efforts in the UK.

In addition to the marketing there are a couple of programs included in the deal. One is the now standard ‘responsible drinking’ campaign for fans and the other is a community program that will assist teams playing in the early rounds with acquiring equipment.

That second part is absolutely something this sport could dearly use right here in the birthplace of Anheuser-Busch. Could you imagine someone signing on with US Soccer as the ‘Builder of American Soccer,’ helping grow the club game in the United States through the US Open Cup and the grassroots level.

For just 10 percent of the value of the deal for the FA Cup or lesser known Carling Cup, A-B or some other sponsor could have a dramatic affect on the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup. The prize money could be significantly raised to increase the importance for MLS clubs to win the tournament, and, more importantly, the travel costs incurred by USSF to assist primarily the lower division clubs would likely be completely covered.

Open Cup & Gold Cup Overlap Update

Sporting Kansas City got half of the missing Gold Cup contingent back with the elimination of Grenada (Craig Rocastle) and Guadeloupe (Stephane Auvray). Auvray did not have far to go to re-united with the club with his team falling at LiveStrong Sporting Park. Still out for the club are Roger Espinoza (Honduras) and Shavar Thomas (Jamaica).

Also returning to their clubs from Canada’s stunning exit on a stoppage time goal are Dwayne De Rosario (New York Red Bulls) and Will Johnson (Real Salt Lake). The Red Bulls were missing five players, but with the US playing Jamaica in the Quarterfinals, they are assured of at least one more returning - of the three in the match - with more than a week before their US Open Cup Third Round match at home.  RSL is now down to just two players missing from the squad.

A Better Bid Process: The Bid-Weighted Lottery

Would a weighted lottery like the NBA's
be more fair in determining whether a
team is home or on the road
Note: This is a re-post from about a year ago from my old (now lesser used) personal blog and is an edited version of a piece that focused on the processes behind Open Cup and league playoff (removed) host bidding...

There is often a lot of hullabaloo over the bidding process for US Open Cup matches. Publicly, the controversy over the decisions in awarding these events and the accompanying home field advantage has traditionally been hot for the US Open Cup fixtures as witnessed by the drama and mudslinging between DC United and the Seattle Sounders [in 2009] prior to the tournament final.

The current policies utilized by US Soccer create a very subjective process that in no way resembles the concept of fair play. Around the world draws are used to determine match hosts in tournament competitions, but the realities of the American soccer business make that impractical.

However, that does not mean lotteries, seeding and financial factors cannot be brought together.

A better concept to consider is that a weighted lottery process for determining match hosts should be adopted. As will be detailed below, this new idea would allow for both the important financial health of the tournament events to remain a top concern while also creating not only some randomness to the selections, but more importantly, fairness to an extremely subjective bidding process.

TheCup.us First 11 for MLS Open Cup Qualifying

Ten clubs battled it out through an eight-game qualifying process to determine the final pair of 2011 US Open Cup entrants from Major League Soccer. Sporting Kansas City and the Chicago Fire claimed their place in the 40-team event, where they will begin play in the Third Round set for June 28.

While Sporting and the Fire were the winning teams, there were plenty of standout individual performances on their clubs and elsewhere, many of which were provided by players who are not always in the regular season starting 11.

States represented in the 2011 US Open Cup

The 2011 edition of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup will feature 40 teams from at least 18* states around the United States. Six states will have at least three clubs playing. California leads the way with six entrants, five of which are located in the greater Los Angeles metropolis. New York is similar with four of its five participants in the greater New York City area. The lone asterisk is whether Washington State will have two entrants or if Oregon becomes the 19th state if Portland defeats Kitsap in the play-in ‘fifth qualifier’ for the PDL Northwest Division.
